Add Ember-day mechanism (privileged feria, not a rank contest) + real content
Deploy / deploy (push) Successful in 1m17s

Researched whether September/Advent Ember days belong in the
movable-feasts.ts table alongside Christ the King/Immaculate Heart of
Mary. Live-verified against the reference engine they don't: Ember days
are privileged ferias (a saint can still win outright against them), not
named feasts contesting the day by rank.

Two smaller pieces instead: calendar/temporal.ts's septemberEmberDayOffset
(Sunday nearest Sept 14, same "nearest" arithmetic adventStart already
used, factored into a shared nearestSunday helper) feeds a new
resolveTemporalCategory check giving those 3 dates privileged-feria-minor
(live-verified correct); calendar/ember-days.ts's applyEmberDay relabels
the day's own temporal id to the Ember day's own (so its real content is
found) when the feria itself wins, or adds a commemoration when a saint
does. Advent Ember days needed no precedence change -- Advent's own
season default already covers them.

Found and fixed a real bug along the way: matins.ts's nocturnReadingIds
only ever pulled a commemorated *sanctoral* id's own readings, never a
commemorated *temporal* one's -- so a commemorated Ember day (the common
case) would never have surfaced its own content. Same root cause as the
day.winner.id gap the IHM relocation fixed earlier, just hiding in the
commemorations loop instead.

Authored all 6 days' real collect + 3 Matins readings each, transcribed
directly from the reference engine (September: Tempora/093-{3,5,6}.txt;
Advent: Tempora/Adv3-{3,5,6}.txt, whose lessons are themselves a
cross-reference to the Annunciation's own Common, followed and
transcribed from there). Kept as 3 separate readings per day rather than
the usual combine-into-one default, since each carries its own
genuinely distinct proper responsory.

// Ember days (Quatuor Temporum) are privileged ferias, not named feasts —
// structurally different from calendar/movable-feasts.ts's rank-contest
// table. The precedence side (whether an occurring saint outranks the

// (September Ember days get their own `privileged-feria-minor` entry

// the ordinary decideOccurrence contest -- this file ONLY handles content
// identity: relabeling the day's own temporal id so an Ember day's real,

// applyMarianSaturday/applyChristmasOctaveSunday relabel a feria's own id

When any one asketh another for credence, he is bound to give some reasonable ground. And so the Angel,
when he announced to Mary the counsel of God, gave, as a proof, the conception of Elizabeth, then aged and
barren, that Mary might perceive, by this example, that with God nothing is impossible. When the holy
Virgin had heard it, she arose and went to visit her cousin. She did not go to see if what she had heard
was true, because she did not believe God, or because she knew not who the messenger had been, or yet
because she doubted the fact adduced in proof. She went joyfully as one who hath received a mercy in
answer to his vow goeth to pay the same. She went with devotion, as a godly person goeth to execute a
religious duty. She went into the hill country in joyful haste. And is it not something that she went up
into the hills? God was already in her womb, and her feeling bore her continually upward. The grace of the
Holy Spirit knoweth no slow working.

Godly women will learn from the example of the Mother of God to take a tender care of their kinswomen who
are with child. In pursuance of this charity, Mary, who had hitherto remained alone at home, was not
deterred by her maidenly shyness from entering on a public journey; she faced for this end the hardships
of mountain travelling; and encountered with a sense of duty the weary length of the way. The Virgin left
her home, and went into the hill country with haste, unmindful of the trouble, and remembering only the
office to which her cousinly love prompted her, in spite of the delicacy of her sex. Maidens will learn
from her not to idle about from house to house, to loiter in the streets, nor to take part in
conversations in public. Mary, as she was hasteful to pass through the public roads, so was she slow again
to enter on them she abode with her cousin about three months.

As the modesty of Mary is a pattern for the imitation of all maidens, so also is her humility. She went to
see Elizabeth, like one cousin going to visit another, and as the younger to the elder. Not only did she
first go, but she first saluted Elizabeth. Now, the purer a virgin is, the humbler ought she to be. She
will know how to submit herself to her elders. She that professeth chastity ought to be a very mistress of
humility. Lowly-mindedness is at once the very ground in which devotion groweth, and the first and
principal rule of its teaching. In this act of the Virgin then we see the greater going to visit and to
succour the lesser: Mary to Elizabeth, Christ to John.

The date, at which the Fore-runner of our Redeemer entered on his public office of preaching, is indicated
to us by the name of the ruler of the Roman Commonwealth, and by those of the princes of Palestine. The
time of his preaching is indicated by these names, because he came as the Fore-runner of Him Who was to be
the Redeemer of some Jews and many Gentiles. Moreover in the enumeration of these worldly monarchs there
is a foreshadowing of the fact, that the Gentiles were about to be gathered into one, and the Jews to be

one Emperor, but in the small kingdom of Judaea are mentioned four masters.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of
sins. It is evident from these words that John the Baptist not only preached, but also administered the
baptism of repentance, and yet that baptism of repentance which he gave, was not really a baptism for the
remission of sins. For there is only one baptism for the remission of sins, and that is our Christian
baptism. It is worthy of note here that the words used are, preaching the baptism of repentance for the
remission of sins, for he himself owned that his baptism was not the true baptism that washes away sin.
Even as the Eternal Word of God made Flesh was greater than the preacher that went before Him, so was His
holy baptism, by which our sins are washed away, far greater than that baptism of repentance which the
Fore-runner preached, and which could never wash away sin.

know His counsels. Nevertheless, some things have been revealed to us, and we may gather from some of the
words and works of the Lord our Saviour, that there was a special purpose of God, in the fact that she who
was chosen to be the mother of the Lord was espoused to a man. Why did not the power of the Highest
overshadow her before she was so espoused? Perhaps it was lest any might blasphemously say that she had
conceived in fornication the Holy One.

the part of a maiden to be timid, to avoid the advances of men, and to shrink from men's addresses. Would
that our women would learn from the example of modesty here set before us. She upon whom the stare of men
had never been fixed was alone in her chamber, and was found only by an angel. There was neither companion
nor witness there, that what passed might not be debased in gossip and the angel saluted her.

The message of God to the Virgin was a mystery, which it was not lawful for the mouth of men, but only of
angels, to utter. For the first time on earth the words are spoken The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee.
The holy maiden heareth, and believeth. At length she saith Behold the handmaid of the Lord be it unto me
according to thy word. Here is an example of lowliness, here is a pattern of true devotion. At the very
moment that she is told she is chosen to be the mother of the Lord she at once declareth herself His
handmaid. The knowledge that she was Mother of God caused in the heart of Mary only an act of humility.

Of what is the Pharisee that was exalted by self-righteousness a type, but of the Jewish people? And of
what the woman which was a sinner and came and wept at the Lord's feet, but of the conversion of the
Gentiles? She brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping, and began to
wash His Feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed His Feet, and anointed
them with the ointment. Of us, therefore, even of us, was that woman a type, if after our sins we turn unto
the Lord with all our heart, and imitate the example of her repentant grief. And of what is the ointment a
type, but of the sweet savour of a good reputation? Whence also Paul saith: In every place we are unto God
a sweet savour of Christ.

If therefore we do good works, whereby we gain for the Church the savour of good reputation, what do we
but pour ointment upon the body of the Lord? But the woman stood at the Feet of Jesus, behind Him we stood
opposite to the Feet of the Lord, what time we were in sin, and went contrary unto His ways. But when we
turn again, and truly repent us of our sins, we stand behind His Feet, for we follow His footsteps against
Whom we once contended. The woman washed His Feet with her tears and we do in very deed the same when we
show the tenderness of sympathy to any of His humbler members, when we feel with His Saints in their
tribulations, when we make their woes our own.

She wipes the Lord's Feet with our hair when we give charity, even out of such things as we have ourselves
no need of, to His holy ones, with whom we feel in their trials, in as far as our heart so sympathizeth,
that the bounty of our hand showeth the truth of our compassion. He washeth the Feet of the Redeemer, but
wipeth them not with his hair, who feeleth for the sufferings of his neighbours, but nevertheless,
relieveth them not, even out of such things as he himself hath no need for. He weepeth, but wipeth not, who
offereth words of tenderness, but sootheth not sorrow by giving such things as be lacking. The woman
kissed the Feet and we do fully the same, if we warmly love those whom out of bounty we support, so that
the neediness of our neighbour is not grievous unto us, nor the penury which we relieve a weariness to us,
nor, when the hand is giving what is needful, the heart is untouched by compassion.

Our Lord and Redeemer speaketh unto us sometimes by words, and sometimes by deeds, sometimes one thing by
words, and another by deeds, and sometimes the same thing both by word and deed. In the portion of the
Gospel which hath this day been read, ye have heard, my brethren, two things, the parable of the fig-tree
and the history of the woman which was bowed together. In both is a manifestation of the Lord's mercy, but
in the one by a parable, in the other by an example. But the barren fig-tree signifieth the same thing as
doth the woman bowed together, and the patience shown to the fig-tree the same thing as doth the healing
of the woman bowed together.

type, but of the same mankind? Man was originally placed in a garden like the fig-tree, and created upright
like the woman, but man fell away by his own willful fault like the fig-tree he brought forth no fruit like
the woman he ceased to stand straight. When he willfully went into sin, because he would not bring forth
the fruit of obedience, he lost his uprightness. The nature which had been created in the image of God,
continued not in honour, but cast aside the state wherein it had been placed and made. The lord of the
vineyard came thrice to the fig-tree, for God hath come in hope, and in warning, seeking fruit from mankind
under three successive dispensations, that is to say, before the law, under the law, and under grace.

It came before the law, in that by natural understanding, He let all know by example of Himself, what and
how they should do toward their neighbor. In the law He came teaching. After the law He came by grace,
opening, manifesting His merciful Presence. But after all these three years He yet hath to complain that He
findeth no fruit upon the fig-tree, for there are still some degraded minds which the inborn voice of the
natural law doth not control, which the commandments do not teach, and which the wonders of the
Incarnation itself do not convert. Of what is the dresser of the vineyard a type, but of the Episcopacy?
For these are they who have the government in the Church, and are therefore truly called the dressers of

Concerning this possessed person whom the Lord healed, after that He was come down from the mount, Mark
saith that he was deaf and dumb, and Matthew that he was lunatic. He was a figure of them of whom it is
said: A fool changeth as the moon. These are they who continue never in one stay, but change now to one
sin, and now to another, waxing and waning dumb, in that they confess not the faith deaf, in that they have
no ears for the word of truth. They foam at the mouth also, and pine away with folly. For it is the way
with idiots, and swooners, and stupified, to foam their spittle out at their mouths. They gnash their teeth
when they are inflamed with the heat of passion. They wither up in the paralysis of sloth and live nerveless
lives unbraced by any strong exercise.

And He said unto them: This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting. While He teacheth the
Apostles how the very worst kind of devil must be driven out, He giveth unto all of us an instruction unto
life, that we may know that the most grievous trials, either from unclean spirits, or from men, are to be
overcome by fasting and prayer. The wrath of the Lord also, when it is kindled to take vengeance of our
sins, can be turned away by this remedy only. To fast, in a general sense, is not only to abstain from
meats, but to restrain oneself from all the enticements of the flesh, and from all evil passions. So also,
to pray, is not only to call in words for the mercy of God, but also, in all things which we do, in
