From ce778d51e399ac9e0380a502fb577ec0eb0ee85f Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Will Estes Date: Mon, 17 Aug 2026 15:26:00 -0400 Subject: [PATCH] Add 6 more February saints/feasts previously never added Purification of the BVM (Feb 2), St. Andrew Corsini (Feb 4), St. John of Matha (Feb 8), Apparition of the Immaculate BVM at Lourdes (Feb 11), Ss. Seven Founders of the Servite Order (Feb 12), St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows (Feb 27) -- all had real, complete Matins content in the reference engine and no exclusion comment; simply never reached during the earlier month-by-month sanctoral pulls. Continuing the same sweep as January's St. Francis de Sales/St. Martina/St. John Bosco. Test update (not a regression): St. Andrew Corsini transfers onto Feb 5 in years where Sexagesima falls on his own Feb 4, outranking St. Agatha when it does -- february-sanctoral.test.ts's proof year for Agatha moved from 2029 (now a collision year) to 2025 (clean). npm test (365 tests) and tsc --noEmit both pass. The Immaculate Virgin + appeared with a young and kind appearance, clothed with a white garment and white + veil, and girt with a blue girdle; she adorned her bare feet with a golden rose. On + the first day of the apparition, which was the eleventh of February in 1858, she + taught the girl the sign of the cross to be duly and piously made, and she incited + her, by her example, to the recitation of the sacred rosary. On the second day of the + apparition, the girl in the simplicity of her heart, fearing diabolic fraud, flung + holy water on the Virgin; but the blessed Virgin, smiling gently, shewed her face + more kindly to her. And when she appeared a third time, she invited the girl to the + grotto for fifteen days. Thence she often addressed her; then commanded, that it + might be declared to the priests, a chapel to be built there, and to be approached + there for supplications in a manner of solemnity. Moreover she commanded that from + the spring, which thus far was hidden under the sand but now was about to erupt, she + might drink the water, and by it cleanse herself. Finally on the feast day of the + Annunciation, to the girl earnestly inquiring her name, the Virgin, her hands having + been moved to her breast and her eyes raised to heaven, answered: I am the Immaculate + Conception. + + + The fame of favours becoming widespread, which the faithful were said to have + received in the sacred grotto, in time the assembly of men increased, whom the + sanctity of the place called to the grotto. Therefore the bishop of Tarbes moved by + the fame of the wonders and the purity of the girl, after a juridical inquiry of the + happenings, approved by his decree the signs of the apparition to be supernatural, + and permitted the worship of the immaculate Virgin in the same grotto. Soon a chapel + is built: from that day the almost innumerable crowds of the faithful, for the + purpose of prayer and supplication, from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and the other + provinces of Europe and also from the remote regions of America arrived there in + every year, and the name of the Immaculate of Lourdes becometh famous of countries + everywhere. The water of the spring, having been carried into all parts of the + world, restored health to the sick. And the Catholic world mindful of such great + favours, built holy shrines there with wonderful work. + + + It is known by all for certain the pilgrimages of this sort to have stirred up faith, + in a world becoming cold, the soul to have increased to profess the Christian law, + and to have spread the worship of the immaculate Virgin in a wonderful manner. Pius + the ninth, with sacred indulgences, distinguished it with the privilege of an + archconfraternity and title of a minor Basilica; and willed the image honoured there + of the Godbearer to be adorned with a crown by his apostolic legate in France. And + Leo the thirteenth also conferred innumerable benefits, and arranged to complete by + his name the solemn dedication of the Church under the title of the Rosary; he + accumulated the extent of which benefits, when, with the asking of many bishops, he + kindly granted a solemn feast to be celebrated under the title of the Apparition of + the blessed Virgin Mary immaculate with a proper Office and proper Mass. Finally + supreme Pontiff Pius the tenth extended the same feast to the universal Church. + status: { la: verified, en: verified } + + - nocturn: 3 + isGospel: false + source: "St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Homily 2 on the text \"Missus est\" (on Luke 1:26-28)" + text: + la: >- + Lætáre, pater Adam, sed magis tu, o Heva mater, exsúlta, qui sicut ómnium paréntes, + ita ómnium fuístis peremptóres; et quod infelícius est, prius peremptóres quam + paréntes. Wherefore, O Eve, betake thyself to Mary Mother, + betake thyself to thy daughter let the daughter answer for the mother let her take + away her mother's reproach; let her make up to her father for her mother's fault for + if man be fallen by means of woman, it is by means of woman that he is raised up + again. + + + What didst thou say, O Adam? The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me + of the tree, and I did eat. These are wrathful words, by the which thou dost rather + magnify than diminish thine offence. Nevertheless, Wisdom hath defeated thy malice. + God asked thee that He might find in thee an occasion of pardon, but, in that He + found it not, He hath sought and found it in the Treasure of His Own mercy. One + woman answereth for another; the wise for the foolish; the lowly for the proud; for + her that gave thee of the tree of death, another that giveth thee to taste of the + tree of life; for her that brought thee the bitter food of sin, another that giveth + thee of the sweet fruits of righteousness. Behold, it was for this that the angel + Gabriel was sent to the Virgin, to the most worshipful of women, a woman more + wonderful than all women, the restorer of them that went before, and the quickener + of them that come after her. + + + Has it not of this thy daughter, O Adam, that God spake when He said unto the + serpent, I will put enmity between thee and the woman And if thou wilt still doubt + that He speaketh of Mary, hear what followeth She shall bruise thy head. Who won + this conquest but Mary? She brought to nought the whole wiles of Satan, whether for + the pollution of her body or the injury of her soul. Their names were Bonfiglio Monaldi, + Bonajuncta Manetti, Manetto Antalli, Amadeo de' Amidei, Uguccio de' Uguccioni, + Sosteneo de' Sostenei, and Alexis de' Falconieri. Upon the holiday of the Assumption + of the Virgin into heaven, in the year 1233, they were praying in the oratory of a + guild called the Guild of Praise, when the same Mother of God appeared to each one + of them, and bade them embrace a life of greater holiness and perfection. These seven + men discussed the matter with the Bishop of Florence, and then, considering neither + the nobility of their birth nor their wealth, and clad in haircloth under vile and + worn-out garments, withdrew into a little house in the country upon the eighth day of + September, that they might begin their holier life upon the same day whereon the + Mother of God herself had by her birth begun her life of holiness upon earth. + + + She showed by a miracle how acceptable in His sight should be their manner of life, + for a short while after, when these seven men were begging alms from door to door + through the city of Florence, it came to pass that some children, among whom was + holy Philip Benizi, who had then scarcely entered the fifth month of his age, called + them blessed Mary's servants, by the which name they were called ever after. To + avoid meeting people, and in the desire to be alone, they all withdrew together to + the solitude of Monte Senario, and there began a kind of heavenly life. They lived in + caves and upon herbs and water only, while they wore out their bodies with watching + and other hardships, while they contemplated unweariedly the sufferings of Christ + and the woes of His most sorrowful Mother. One Good Friday, when their thoughts were + fixed thereon more than ever, the Blessed Virgin appeared to them twice, and showed + them her garments of mourning as those wherein they should clothe themselves. She + bade them know that she would take it right well that they should raise up in the + Church a new order to recall the memory of the sorrows which she bore beneath the + Cross of the Lord. Holy Peter, the illustrious martyr of the Order of Friars + Preachers, learnt this not only from his familiar converse with these holy men, but + also from a special vision of the Mother of God, and it was on his incitement that + they founded the regular Order called that of the Servites, or servants of the + Blessed Virgin, the which Order was afterward approved by the Supreme Pontiff + Innocent IV. + + + These holy men, when they had gathered to themselves some companions, began to go + through the cities and towns of Italy, and especially of Tuscany, everywhere + preaching Christ crucified, stilling contests among the citizens, and calling back + almost countless backsliders into the path of grace. Neither did they make Italy + only the field of their Gospel labours, but also France, Germany, and Poland. They + passed away to be ever with the Lord when they had spread far and wide a sweet + savour of Christ, and were famous also for the glory of signs and wonders. As one + love of brotherhood and of the monastic life had joined them together upon earth, so + one grave held their dead bodies, and one honour was paid them by the people. For + this reason the Supreme Pontiffs Clement XI. and Benedict XIII. confirmed the honour + which had for centuries been paid to them individually, and Leo XIII., after proof of + their miracles which had been wrought by God on the common invocation of these + saints, after their veneration had been sanctioned in the jubilee year of his + priesthood, decreed to them the honours paid to Saints, and ordered that their + memory should every year be kept throughout the universal Church with an office and + Mass. + status: { la: verified, en: verified } + + - nocturn: 3 + isGospel: false + source: "St. Jerome, Commentary on Matthew, Book III (on Matt 19:27-29)" + text: + la: >- + Grandis fidúcia! As a youth, when studying letters at Spoleto, he seemed for a time to be + allured by the empty beauty and pomp of the world. But by the gift of the merciful + God, who had already called him to the perfection of a Christian life when he had + fallen sick, he began to tire of the vanity of the world, and to desire immortal + treasures alone. But to quicken his obedience to the call of God, it happened that + as he saw the celebrated Image of the Blessed Virgin being carried with solemn pomp + outside the precincts of the church of Spoleto, he experienced the flame of divine + love, and at the same time decided to enter the Institute of the Clerks of the + Passion of Jesus. Therefore, after overcoming no slight difficulties, he joyfully + donned the somber habit in the secluded place of Morrovalle, and chose to be called + Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, to recall forever the memory of her joys and griefs. + + + In the novitiate, day by day he became conspicuous for regular observance and for + the exercise of all the virtues, and in a short time he came to be considered a + pattern of perfect holiness, not only by his companions and his seniors, but also + beyond the confines of the monastery; he became a sweet odour in Christ in every + place. An assiduous devotee of the Lord's Passion, he spent days and nights + meditating upon it. He was drawn by unbelievable zeal towards the Holy Eucharist, a + memorial of that Passion; and when he nourished himself with it, he burned with + seraphic ardour. There was nothing more noticeable than his filial piety towards the + great Mother of God. He was accustomed to pay her honour for every type of devotion, + but especially to contemplate her stricken and afflicted by the sufferings of Jesus, + with such sorrow that he shed floods of tears. The sorrowful Virgin was, as it were, + the whole reason of his being, and the teacher of the holiness that he had acquired. + As a result all his associates shared the one opinion that this servant of God had + been inspired from on high so that the cult of St. Mary of Sorrows through his + example might receive a great increase. + + + Among other virtues, he especially loved Christian humility and obedience; for he + considered himself the least of all. He therefore strove eagerly to do all the most + menial work of the house, and he most diligently performed, not only the direct + commands, but even the unexpressed wishes of his superiors. Curbing his senses, and + accustoming himself to a life of austerity, he retained unfaded the flower of his + virginity, and completely crucified to the world, he lived to God alone, enjoying an + intimate familiarity with his Lord. And so, at Isola in the Abruzzi, filling the + short span of his life with so many noble virtues, consumed by the fire of charity + rather than by disease, and refreshed by the aid of the Mother of God, his soul flew + to heaven in a most peaceful journey in the year 1862, at the age of twenty-four. + Then, as he had been made illustrious by God through miracles, Pope Pius X added him + to the number of the Blessed in heaven. He blesseth the children by taking them up in his arms, to shew that + such as are poor in spirit do merit his blessing, grace, and love. + + + And as he was going forth on his journey, a certain man came running up, and fell + on his knees before him, and asked him: Good Master, what shall I do that I may + inherit eternal life? Doubtless this seeker after eternal life was one of those who + had heard the Lord say that whoso shall not receive the kingdom of God as little + child shall not enter therein; and therefore, taking the safer course, he asketh + for himself not in parables, but simply and openly, for teaching concerning the + meritorious works by which eternal life is to be gained. Whereupon Christ said: + Thou knowest the commandments. This is the chastity of childlike innocence, which + is proposed for our imitation, if we wish to enter the kingdom of God. But he + answering, said unto him: Master, all these have I observed from my youth. This man + should not be considered as having asked the Lord with a view to tempting him (as + some have thought), or to have lied about his life when he said he had kept the + commandments of the law; but that rather he was trying to explain how he had + hitherto lived. Because, if he be considered guilty of lies and pretence, it would + not have been said of Jesus, who looketh on the secrets of the heart, that he, + beholding him, loved him. + + + For the love of the Lord goeth out to all those who not only keep the commandments + of the law, but have regard even for things which are not of strict precept. Which + latter things he who came not to destroy the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill + them, showeth forth unto such as would be perfect, saying: Sell whatsoever thou + hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, + follow me. Whosoever would be perfect must sell all (not merely in part, as did + Ananias and Sapphira), and thereafter give all to the poor, and thus prepare for + himself a treasure in the kingdom of heaven. But contempt for riches is not enough + to achieve perfection. He must also follow the Saviour, leaving evil and doing + good. For it is easier to spurn the world than the will; and many spurn their + riches, but fail thereafter to follow the Lord. Whosoever would follow him must be + his imitator, and walk in his footsteps. For whoso saith he believeth in Christ + ought also to walk as Christ walked. + status: { la: verified, en: verified } diff --git a/src/data/propers/nocturn-readings/st-john-of-matha.yml b/src/data/propers/nocturn-readings/st-john-of-matha.yml new file mode 100644 index 0000000..ed30f0f --- /dev/null +++ b/src/data/propers/nocturn-readings/st-john-of-matha.yml @@ -0,0 +1,196 @@ +# Matins Nocturn 2-3 readings for St. John of Matha, Confessor (Feb 8). +# Sourced directly from web/www/horas/Latin/Sancti/02-08.txt, +# English/Sancti/02-08.txt. +# +# Nocturn 2: Lectio4-6 combined into one reading, one continuous vita. +# Nocturn 3: his own file's Lectio7-9 are a direct `@Commune/C5:LectioN` +# cross-reference (not his own proper text) -- the Common of a +# Confessor's own Gospel-incipit-plus-homily (Luke 12:35-40, Pope St. +# Gregory the Great), sourced from Commune/C5.txt directly. He went for his education first to + Aix and then to Paris. At the University of Paris, where he went through the course + of Divinity and took the degree of Doctor, he became eminent for learning and virtue. + For this reason the Bishop of Paris ordained him Priest, an honour from which his + lowliness caused him to shrink, in the hope that he should induce him to remain at + Paris, and be a bright example of wisdom and manners to the students who resorted + thither. He offered up the Holy Sacrifice to God for the first time in the private + Chapel of the Bishop, and in the presence of that Prelate and diverse other persons. + In the midst of the ceremony, a vision from God appeared to John. There appeared to + him an angel, clad in raiment white and glistering; having sewn on his breast a + cross of red and blue. His arms were crossed before him, and his hands were upon the + heads of two slaves, one a Christian and the other a Moor. And immediately the man of + God was in the spirit, and knew that he was called to the work of ransoming bondsmen + from the power of the unbelievers. + + + That he might set himself with due forethought to the carrying out of his work, he + withdrew into a certain desert, and there, by the will of God, he found Felix de + Valois, who had already spent many years in that place. With him he joined company, + and they passed three years together in continual prayer, meditation, and all + spiritual exercises. It came to pass, one day, when they were sitting on the bank of + a spring, that there came to them a stag having between his horns a cross of red and + blue. Felix cried out in wonder at that sight, and John then told him of the vision + that had appeared to him when he was saying his first Mass. Thenceforth they gave + themselves with redoubled fervour to prayer, and, being three times warned in + sleep, they determined to go to Rome, and pray the Pope to institute an Order for the + ransom of prisoners. They arrived at the time of the election of Innocent III., who + received them courteously, and entertained in his mind their petition. While he was + in consideration, he went to the Lateran Cathedral, on the second Feast of St. + Agnes, and there, while Mass was being solemnly sung, at the moment of the + elevation of the Sacred Host, there appeared to him an angel, clad in raiment white + and glistering, having sewn on his breast a cross of red and blue, and making as + though he would free prisoners. Thereupon the Pope founded the Order, commanding + that it should be called the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Ransom of + prisoners, and that they who professed in it should be clad in white raiment, + having sewn on their breasts a cross of red and blue. + + + The Order being thus established, the holy Founders returned into France, and built + their first Convent at Cerfroid, in the diocese of Meaux. Felix remained in charge of + this house, and John went back to Rome with several companions. To them Innocent + gave the house, Church, and hospital of St. Thomas de Formis on the Coelian Mount, + with great endowments and property. Moreover he gave them a letter of introduction to + Miramolin, King of Morocco, and they began with bright hopes the work of ransoming + prisoners. John next betook himself to Spain, great part of which was then in the + hands of the Saracens, and stirred up the hearts of the kings, princes, and all the + faithful to have pity on slaves and the poor. He built Convents, founded Hospitals, + and ransomed many bondsmen, to the great gain of souls. At last he returned to Rome, + still busied in good works, but worn out by unceasing toil, and weakened by + sickness. As he drew near the end of his earthly pilgrimage, his burning love for God + and for his neighbour suffered no diminution. He called together his brethren, and + earnestly exhorted them to go on with that work of ransom which had been pointed out + to them from heaven, and then fell asleep in the Lord, on the 21st day of December, + 1213. His body was buried with due honour in the Church of St. Thomas de Formis. + status: { la: verified, en: verified } + + - nocturn: 3 + isGospel: false + source: "Pope St. Gregory the Great, Homily 13 on the Gospels (on Luke 12:35-40)" + text: + la: >- + Sancti Evangélii, fratres caríssimi, apérta vobis est léctio recitata.
